Loss of colour and fading are a phenomenon we are all used to on our possessions. From walls, decking, furniture, carpets we all see the fading of the original colour precipitating over time. With walls, decking and other timbers we re-paint or re-stain them. But with other finishes this is not so simple. So slowing down or stopping this fading process will keep these items looking “like new” for longer.

Color Glo has been working hard in our R&D centre in Minneapolis to provide a solution.

Finishes Fade Because of Ultraviolet Light

  • It is all about the chemical makeup of an object. The technical term for colour fading is photodegradation. There are light absorbing colour bodies called chromophores that are present in dyes. The colour(s) we see are based upon these chemical bonds and the amount of light that is absorbed in a particular wavelength.

  • Ultraviolet rays can break down the chemical bonds and thus fade the colour(s) in an object - it is a bleaching effect. Some objects may be more prone to fading, such as dyed textiles and watercolours. Other objects may reflect the light more, which makes them less prone to fade

So why does ultraviolet light cause colour to fade?

The answer is because of photodegradation.
